Raku - a japanese firing technique translated as "beauty by chance", where clay fired to 1900 degrees is removed from an outdoor, gas fired kiln at full temperature, buried in a can of sawdust, lidded to reduce the chamber of oxygen thereby creating copper lusters, turquoise blues, crackling and iridescent glaze effects. Students will devote two days to learning the basics of wheel throwing (bowls, plates, vases, jars, etc.), one evening for trimming pots and one evening for glazing. This intensive workshop will culminate with a dramatic Raku firing where all students will participate.
