SA 7: Sculpting the Figure in Bas-Relief
Instructor: Christopher Gowell

10 Weeks
Tuesday 6:00 - 9:00 PM (September 19 - November 21)

This clay relief class will focus on sculpting the beauty of the figure and the portrait, using the techniques of bas-relief (low relief). Standing between sculpture and drawing, bas-relief is more closely related to drawing, with its mark making and use of texture. Using contour drawing skills and the modeling of light and shade produced by projections and recessions and by the inclination of planes away from and towards the light, relief sculpture in clay is a wonderful way to combine the figure and its environment. Clay modeling techniques with water clay and plasticene, and ways to prepare a relief for sand casting in bronze will be demonstrated. Optional: 3 day bronze relief sand casting workshop follows. See SA 22.
