(September 25 - October 31)
Throughout the centuries, artists have portrayed plants for their aesthetic beauty and for the purpose of identification. This course will introduce students to the art of Botanical illustration and it's traditions and conventions. Examples of Master works that capture the plant's true identity and the use of subtle modulation of tone to reveal detail will be shown. Students will work from live plants using graphite pencils, learning how to develop an accurate botanical drawing. Class instruction includes: observing and recording plant structures, measuring proportions, creating a contour drawing, rendering details of plant parts, exercises in graphite shading and 3D form, and the aesthetic placement of plant parts on a page.
