Encaustic - meaning "to burn in" in Greek - dates back to the fifth Century BC. Used as a contemporary medium, it is a versatile method of painting with beeswax based paint kept molten on a heated palette. Students will learn to make their own encaustic medium and prepare supports in the first class. In the following sessions, students will mix colors, apply wax, fuse, etch, layer, combine collage, transfer Xerox images and incorporate found objects.
