Raku is a Japanese firing technique translated as "beauty by chance", where clay fired to 1900 degrees is removed from an outdoor, gas fired kiln at full temperature, buried in a can of sawdust, lidded to reduce the chamber of oxygen thereby creating copper lusters, turquoise blues, crackling and iridescent glaze effects.Students will explore handbuilding techniques such as pinch, coil, slab, draping, and texturing methods to create sculptural and functional ceramic works. A variety of glaze applications will be introduced. The course culminates with a dramatic Raku firing with all students participating.
