SA 21: Portrait Painting In Oil
Instructor: Christopher Pothier

8 Weeks
Thursday 2:00 - 5:00 PM (June 21 - August 9)

The role of the painted portrait in the world of art is an extraordinary one. From the ancient Romans in Pompeii and the early Egyptians to Hans Holbein and John Singer Sargent, the portrait serves humanity by letting us see into the soul of the subject in the most intimate manner. In this class, we will begin by studying the basic components of the face and head using simple tonal studies and minimizing color. We will explore the way other artists have interpreted the portrait and possibly come up with some original ideas as well. The focus the will be on eliminating the edges, softening and sculpting the features to make the portrait truly come alive. Color will be strongly emphasized. The self-portrait is a must for this class; an artist can learn so much from this activity.
