This is a flexible class allowing for personal style and interpretation. Students will gain knowledge of the tools used for carving an object in stone, hard wood and/or softwood depending on the experience and needs of each student. Contemplation of the material's qualities and mass will determine the form and posture of the object to be carved. Power tools will be introduced and several finishing techniques will be demonstrated. Students will need to purchase 2 or 3 stone or wood carving chisels, sources and styles discussed at the first class. This class is offered off site in the Eliot carving studio of noted sculptor Antoinette Schultze and will have marble & wood available for purchase, or bring your own.
