Oil painting in the traditional realist manner is a teachable skill. At it's most fundamental level, it involves an understanding of the basic materials of painting - - medium, thinner, pigments, brushes, canvas and palette. But more importantly, it involves attitude -- attitude toward the subject and attitude toward the canvas. In Basic Oil Painting students will learn to see like painters -- that is, to organize their perceptions by light, dark and color and free themselves of visual assumptions that often lead painters astray. From there, students will develop an efficient, painterly attitude toward the canvas, one that emphasizes gesture and paint quality to create paintings that truly reflect personal artistic vision.
