Sydney Sparrow

Sydney Bella Sparrow is a painter and draftsperson who most often works with oil paint on wood panels. Her subjects include florals, fruit, and figures.  She incorporates items from the natural world, combined with cultural and hand-crafted items, such as silk, yarn, fabrics, ceramics, and vintage wood elements.  Her work is imagined through the style of classical realism combined with a contemporary sensibility.  Influences range from the botanical illustrations of Maria Sibylla Merian and the lush Dutch still lifes of painter Rachel Ruysch to the graphic and textile influences of Josef and Anni Albers.

Sparrow's work has been featured internationally in solo shows, notable exhibitions, and museums including the Sarah Orne Jewett Museum, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the Florence Griswold Museum, St. Botolph Club in Boston, MA, the Discover Center in Portsmouth, NH, and the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona, Spain.

Sparrow was born in Chicago Illinois, and previously resided in New York City. She currently lives and paints on the Maine seacoast. She received a BFA in painting from the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Her work is held in private and public collections around the world
