SA 1 HOW TO USE THE PHOTOGRAPH IN PAINTING with Tom Glover

$315.00

Mondays, February 2 – April 6

10 Weeks, 10 - 1

Cheating??!! Not at all. Degas used the photograph, Hockney used the photograph and he claimed Vermeer used the camera obscura, but that’s a whole other ballgame. The main focus will be spent on finding how best to use the photograph as a device which can help in the development of a painting, as a stepping stone to creativity and a spark to begin a painting. Photographs can also hinder if relied on too much in the making of a painting, unless of course the aim is photorealism. It will be my task to illuminate how the photograph can help formalistically by speeding up composition, elucidate structure, form development, chromatic combinations and so on. It can help refresh memories of the subject matter and guide in ways through its limitations— something we will explore as well. All levels welcome. Bring painting gear of choice, multiple substrates and photos to work from.
