SA 2 WHAT MAKES ABSTRACTION TICK? with Tom Glover
Mondays, February 2 – April 6
2-5pm, 10 weeks
This will be an exploration into how abstract painting developed and how you might apply some of its techniques and ideas. It has been a force in painting for 150 years from its early break from traditional painting to the radical modern “explorers” at the turn of the 19th century. Be prepared to do your own explorations and not be afraid to try. We will be looking at a great many abstract artists from the earliest who broke with tradition, to some of the last Abstract Expressionists before that movement morphed into Pop Art, Minimalism, Photorealism and the backlash of figurative work which re-emerged again in the 1970’s. Bring your favorite medium(s) and know that some abstract painters broke all the rules mixing in materials that had not been considered usable in fine art. Subjects used by abstract artists are far ranging from cities, still lifes, landscapes, machines, geometric shapes and on and on. We will experiment, learn and have fun.
