Spring/Summer 2021

I am so pleased to announce that we offer a plethora of outdoor in person classes this Spring and Summer. I can't wait to see your faces as we all crawl out from under our isolated rocks and re-connect through art. We offer lots of Plein Air drawing and painting classes, one Virtual Figure Drawing class, an Indigo Dyeing workshop and an Intro to Sand Casting in Bronze workshop.

May classes include Suzanne Lacke's Pastel Landscape Workshop (SA 7), a one day Saturday on location class that covers the technical uses and applications of pastels as well as color mood, composition and color mixing. An historical overview of pastel landscape painting  through slides and books will show you the possibilities inherent in this beautiful medium. Suzanne also offers Virtual Figure Drawing (SA 6). Gesture drawing, contour drawing, sighting for correct proportions, massing, negative space, foreshortening, cropping and composition are all explored with dedicated professional models and an experienced professional instructor.

Alastair Dacey begins his Plein Air- Break it Down (SA 5) series of 6 week classes in mid May with a second series through mid August. He offers individual attention and feedback as well as demos and class discussions. Alastair is passionate about Plein Air painting and wants to offer his considerable experience to help you do your best.

Russel Whitten, a consummate watercolorist who studied intensively with Dewitt Hardy, returns this summer to offer Outdoor Watercolor & Drawing (SA 4) . Weekly demonstrations and discussions regarding the control of watercolor media and materials and the direct observation of forms, all under the guidance of a very personable artist, is the best way to learn what can be a daunting medium.

Sean Beavers offers a 4 day intensive En Plein Air Landscape Painting Workshop (SA1). Each session is split into 2 parts- a discussion of materials and techniques along with demonstrations at the chosen seacoast area location, and then painting onsite with Sean's generous critiques and demos as your guide. I take this every chance I can get and love the on site demonstrations and the camaraderie of other art students.

Amanda Rouse returns in August with her popular one day Indigo Dyeing (SA 10). In this 4 hour workshop you will learn Shibori, the Japanese tradition of folding and manipulating fabrics to make intricate patterns. Her previous workshop produced startlingly gorgeous fabrics. A participant was generous enough to gift me a set of Indigo Dyed napkins, which I treasure and use to this day.

An Intro to Sandcasting; Bronze Workshop (SA 11) is taught by our Green Foundry owners Lauren and Josh Dow. On two weekends in August, you can learn the complex and rewarding skill of bronze casting using traditional sand casting techniques. Using bonded sand molds, become acquainted with the equipment and tools for creating small scale bronze objects.

Of course there are many other excellent instructors and classes for your instruction and amusement. Join in as we all begin to enjoy some sociability along with excellent art instruction.

Cheers,

Christopher
